Introduction : Good Senna leaves is known by the bright, fresh, yellowishgreen colour, with a faint and peculiar odour rather like green tea, and a nauseous, mucilaginous, sweetish, slightly bitter taste. It should be powdered only as wanted, because the powder absorbs moisture, becomes mouldy, and loses its value. Boiling destroys its virtues, unless it is in a covered vessel.

Bulk Senna Leaves

Manufacturing Process : For making Senna leaf powder the healthy fresh leaves are collected. It should be noted that the leaves should be free from any contamination by environmental toxins. Then they are washed properly (to remove the physical impurities if any) with pure water and dried in a dust free environment. Then it is grinded to make the fine powder.

Action :

  • It is used in the treatment of constipation, working through a stimulation of intestinal peristalsis.
  • It also helps to temporarily prevent fluid from being absorbed from the large intestine, thus contributing to softer stools.
  •

Combination : The addition of cloves, ginger, cinnamon, or other aromatics are excellent correctives of the nauseous effects. A teaspoonful of cream of tartar to a teacupful of the decoction of infusion of Senna, is a mild and pleasant cathartic. Senna Pods, or the dried, ripe fruits, are official in use as senna powder, though the quantity is restricted, as an adulterant. They are milder in their effects than the leaflets, as the griping is largely due to the resin, and the pods contain none, but have about 25 per cent more cathartic acid and emodin than the leaves, without volatile oil.

    Dose :

  • Adult: From 6 to 12 pods.
  • Children: From 3 to 6 pods.
  • Senna Pods

Preparation : Infused in a claret-glass of cold water, act mildly but thoroughly upon the whole intestine.
